whey protein would probably work. That combined with ungodly amounts of hamburgers and ice cream should get you an extra five lbs and maybe even a heart attack! But seriously, protein shakes are good.
Just eat and eat a lot. Eat the right kinds of foods, healthy, no junk. Protein found in foods like fish, meats and dairy are easier to absorb than actual protein drinks. Yeah, protein shakes are good but dont drink too much, your body can only absorb a certain amount of the whey protein. It all depends on your weight, so dont go wasting a 50 dollar tub of Whey when the only thing that will happen is it will just go right through you.
If your body is at all like mine, you may have a hard time gaining weight/muscle mass. I'm an ectomorph body type, which basically means I need to eat a lot of food and work out with a lots of weight with low reps. You would probably get the best results doing power lifts like Bench Press, squats, lunges, dead lifts, etc...
I gained about 7 pounds my first term doing this. Maybe for you and your body it will be a little easier.
Why just five pounds, and what type of pounds are you trying to gain? You could east a lot if you are looking to just gain weight, like the others suggested, or you could just do a lot of push ups. I just did push ups my last term of high school and i geined like 15 lbs of peck, shoulder, and tricep muscle. I got to where I was doing 3 sets of 65, then would challenge people to speed push up contests.
Thanks so much guys, I also have a body much like yours sam. I eat alot and burn alot. So while I see a fair amount of gain in endurence and strength I see little gain in the way of size or shape, this gets old fast. Also doesn't help that the sports i enjoy (soccer, climbing, hiking) favor the lighter frame esp in climbing. As far as push ups go, I have a fair amount of pain in my wrist when they are under that kind of force due to the 8 broken bones i have amassed in my arms over the years, so i am stuck doing light weight and lots of reps. Think incline push ups.
I havent quite got 8 broken bones in the my arms yet, i just have 4 in my right arm alone, and I can feel it at the beginning, but i then get strong enough, in time, to where it dosent hurt at all. When you do incline push up do you put you feet up on something, or you hands? Incline with your feet up are defineatly harder on the wrists.
protein is the key to muscle synthesis. if you are considering supplements just ask me (i've tried most of them). if not, try to eat 1.5 grams of preotein per lb of body weight per day. i gained 2 lb of lean body mass last week by eating 6 eggs every morning and a can of chink tuna at night. results may vary.
Dustin- Are you talking like over 200grams of protein a day for yourself? And also...'chink' tuna? Is that chopped of meat of someone from the Asian persuasion or did you mean chicken tuna... thanks for the clarification.
By incline I deffinetly mean putting my hands up not elevating my feet as that would just put more weight on my wrists than a normal push up. I use a soft object like the edge of my bed or the back of the couch to help build the micro muscles that I use in climbing as well.

chunk tuna. i'm not into the exotic meats anymore. i've been averaging about 190 g of protein per day over 6 meals.
